Since primary school, Tim de Vries had one goal: the Olympic Games. For years, that dream seemed within reach as a top-level trampoline gymnast. Then tragedy struck. A bad landing resulted in a shattered leg and amputation. For many, this would end a sports career; for Tim, it was merely the start of a new chapter.

Refusing to give up, Tim transformed his Olympic ambition into a Paralympic mission. After briefly exploring rowing, he found his true passion in handbiking. It was a masterstroke. The explosiveness and body control from his gymnastics background proved perfect for converting power into speed on the tarmac.

HIS CAREER

His rise in the H5 class has been impressive. Tim has racked up silverware, crowning himself World Champion three times. Following his debut in Rio (2016), he claimed a glorious bronze medal in Tokyo (2021). A recent third place at the World Championships proves he remains firmly at the top of the world rankings.

Handbiking is technically distinct from standard cycling, requiring bespoke solutions. The cadence differs, power comes entirely from the upper body, and the position relative to the road is unique. Standard bike parts simply cannot meet the specific demands of elite-level handbiking.

TIM DE VRIES X TMP

To maximize his output, Tim requires non-standard gear ratios. The chainrings must have the exact tooth count and stiffness to transfer his explosive arm power directly into speed, with zero energy loss. For years, Tim has relied on The Mechanic Parts. Since we are not bound by standard sizes, we manufacture exactly what he needs.

For Tim, the collaboration with The Mechanic Parts is about one thing: speed—both on the road and in delivery. Because his bike demands custom, non-standard rings, precision is key. We ensure his equipment is always race-ready, no matter the complexity. Our parts are a small but essential component of his impressive results.
