Born with a condition affecting his optic nerves, Tristan Bangma perceives the world as a misty, blurred haze. In his youth, this impairment initially led to isolation and uncertainty; exclusion and bullying at school resulted in battles with depression.
However, the bicycle offered him freedom. Ignited by his father’s passion and discovered during a talent day in 2012, Tristan found his true calling on the tandem. Social isolation quickly gave way to elite sporting ambitions.
HIS CAREER
Tristan’s career is defined by a constant drive for innovation. In Rio (2016), he stunned the world by taking gold as a sprinter in the 1km time trial. Never content with standing still, he reinvented himself as an endurance rider. This transformation led to dominant victories in Tokyo and Paris, where he broke the magical 4-minute barrier (60 km/h) in the pursuit. With 6 Paralympic medals—5 of them gold—he is one of the most successful Dutch Paralympians in history.
Tandem racing at this level is a battle against the elements, opponents, and the equipment itself. The immense forces two elite athletes exert on a single drivetrain are staggering. Off-the-shelf components often fail under this pressure, which in the past led to mechanical defects and sleepless nights before major events.

TRISTAN BANGMA X TMP
To eliminate mechanical failure, Tristan sought a more robust solution. Since his bikes are fully custom, the drivetrain required the same attention to detail. At The Mechanic Parts, we provided the answer with specially developed chainrings. Combining our CNC-milling expertise with Tristan’s specific needs, we created parts that effortlessly withstand these extreme forces.
The partnership between Tristan Bangma and The Mechanic Parts proves that gold is won in the details. Switching to our custom parts put an end to the sleepless nights, leaving Tristan with the peace of mind to focus on one thing: pure speed. We are proud that our engineering forms the foundation upon which his world-class performances are built.
